twinkle – how people, places and things shine and share happiness

winks – little hints from life lighting the way toward one’s happiest path

I shine and share happiness through food.  I feel happy when I cook good grown grub food for good folks.  Find how you shine.  And share it. And watch the winks pop up and lead right to your happy.

Treat yourself.  Make this today, or maybe tomorrow if you don’t have all the stuff to make it the second after you
read the rockin’ recipe.

The original recipe came to me during the Fuzzy Hubbs’ fast and furious affair brewing his own beer. I think he
made two batches (of beer, not bread).  That molasses-looking slop would ferment or whatever in a ridiculously
large vat-type thing in our old gorgeous dining room in our first home.  It drove me bananas to have that shit
bubbling away, wrapped in the cozy throw from our old gorgeous living room to keep it at the right temperature or whatever, which also drove me bananas.

Whatever.

It taught me to choose my battles.  It taught me that it was just fine if my house looked like a home and not an HGTV model. It taught me to encourage happy hobbies and that sometimes/most times, new happy hobbies that take a long time to handle fizzle away all on their own without a fight.  Now all that beer brewing shit sits on a shelf in the back of our basement in our new home.  I suggested selling it all or giving it away when we moved two years ago and the Fuzzy Hubbs wanted to keep it.

Whatever.

And, like most things, something really good came out of it.  A recipe for homemade beer bread.  As with most recipes I come across, I put a twinkle twist on it.  And like most twinkle twists, it came out better than the
original.

This whips up in a minute. It never fails.  It makes a great thank you gift for your neighbor who lets out the dog when you’re out of town.  It makes a great mate to some fab chili.  It makes great toast to top with BBQ Shrooms (to be featured this Friday) hummus and veggies, or (Sloppy) Lentil Joes.  It makes your house smell fantastic and your tummy happy.  And you know, I’m all about the happy.

Whatever.  Just go make it and eat away.

BEER BREAD

1 beer, the darker the better
2/3 c brown sugar
3 cups self-rising flour
1 t crushed dried rosemary
½ t garlic powder
½ stick non-dairy margarine or butter, if that’s your thing, melted

Preheat oven to 375. Mix beer and brown sugar in a big old bowl.  Add flour and seasoning and stir until just mixed.  Pour in well-greased large loaf pan.  Drizzle melted margarine over batter.  Bake for 50 minutes.  Let cool, pop out of the pan, and dig in.
